Horehound is a album released on July 14th 2009 in the United States. The album is a creation of The Dead Weather, which is a band that is labeled a “supergroup”. This supergroup is comprised of Jack White (of The White Stripes, The Raconteurs), Alison Mosshart ( of The Kills), Dean Fertita ( of The Queens of the Stone Age) and Jack Lawrence ( of The Raconteurs). The title of supergroup comes from the fact that all the members are already famous from performing individually or in other acts.
Their first Album which is titled Horehound, debuted as number 6 in the U.S Billboards Top 200 list and is your typical american rock music. The ability to take the well used idea of simple and pure rock music and make it continue to work is something that all the band members have brought to the album. Jack White plays a pivotal role in the sound of The Dead Weather by bringing his signature blues and jazz instrumental sound to the band as well as lending vocals to several songs. The band has often been referred to as having a southern gothic ambience because f the rock and blues sound given off by them.
An interesting part of the band is how varied many songs on the album sound. “Cut Like a Buffalo” has a more rock sound to it with a electronic keyboard supplying a varied experimental sound. While the songs “Treat me Like Your Mother” and “Hang You From the Heavens” contains a very raw heavier rock sound with guitar rifts and bass drums permeating the music. If blues is more your style the last noticeably different song is titled “Will There be Enough Water” sounds like a older blues song and offers a nice break from the heavier songs on the album.
This is song number two on the album and is titled “Hang you from the Heaven” it is very typical of The Dead Weathers sound.
In the end much of the music on Horehound comes down to personal preference because in order to like the album you must be able to enjoy blues and rock or most songs wont tickle your fancy. The odds are also high as well that if you dislike any of the artists other bands or projects that you wont care for the band because The Dead Weather has aspects of all the other groups played in by the artists. Yet if the sound of blues and rock makes your heart beat a little faster The Dead Weather is worth checking out and can be found online or in stores for about $14-$15 depending on if you buy a New or Used copy.
